  A roving reporter, or freelance reporter, is an independent writer/reporter who writes human interest stories on a wide variety of subjects. Becoming a roving reporter and getting your stories published by newspapers and magazines is relatively straightforward. Write a few sample articles and submit the articles to as many newspapers and magazines as possible. Providing the stores are interesting and well written, there is the possibility that one or more of the newspapers or magazines will ask for additional articles, or even a regular feature.
