The idea is to develop a computer system that could help to reduce the amount of infant deaths due to SIDS.
The system will consist of a standard video camera and computer that will run special software. The camera will monitor the baby's skin tone, which changes color when heart rate decreases suddenly, and an algorithm in the software will estimate the baby's pulse. If the pulse slows down dramatically, an alarm will sound and wake up both the baby and the parents.
A sudden decrease in heart rate is thought to precede SIDS deaths.
