The idea is to create an organ care system that will eliminate the need to pack hearts on ice, instead keeping the heart beating almost all the time from donor to transplant patient.
Once the donor heart is placed in the device it will be brought back to beating, flooded with oxygen and nutrient rich blood, and kept at the optimal temperature. The system will also monitor the heart and display how well it is functioning during the transport to the patient. The system will also allow donor hearts to be monitored and tested over time, which could help to determine the likelihood the organ being accepted or rejected.
