Edible food spoilage sensors
Using gold and silk it is possible to create edible indicators that will emit an electromagnetic signal when they sense food has gone bad.
The sensors will be developed by embedding gold antenna in a film of purified silk substrate. The sensors will be able to detect the chemical change in spoiling food and send out an electromagnetic signal that can be read by an external reader.
The sensors could be useful for managing prepared foods, providing more reliable spoilage information than the stated sell-by date.
