My idea is to have bikes with built in solar powered LED lights. Besides using solar, the lights of the bike could also be charged through a cell phone's micro USB. The bike's frame will be made of super light rust free aluminum, and will include an ABUS X-plus cylinder chain lock integrated into the frame, deterring envious thieves.

The idea is to create a raincoat that will not only protect the wearer from the rain but also purify the water with charcoal and chemical filters. The water filters and storage containers will be hidden in the coat while the tubes will be left visible to enhance the aesthetics. The collar of the raincoat will collect the rainwater, which will then be passed through the filters at the back of the coat and stored in the hip.

The idea is to create the world's first smartphone airbag system. The system will feature an integrated accelerometer that will detect if the phone is falling too quickly, triggering the tiny airbags to cushion the landing. The application will also include other ways to break the fall, such as streams of gas to slow the fall or using springs instead of airbags.

The thermal system will be able to concentrate the power of 2000 suns while also delivering fresh water. The system will follow the sun and will be made up of hundreds of photovoltaic chips that will gather energy at the center while being cooled by a microchannel water cooling process. This will allow the each chip to concentrate the solar energy without being damaged by extreme heat. And since the water in the microchannels reaches up to 194 degrees, it will be used to heat a...

A sensor system inspired by the blind cave fish could allow autonomous underwater vehicles to navigate more accurately while also eliminating the sonar "pings" that can disturb aquatic animals. The blind cave fish navigates its terrain by detecting changes in water pressure with a row of hair cells down either side of its body. The new system will feature an array of two rows of five sensors each measuring only 1.8 x 1.8 mm. Each sensor will contain a hydrogel surrounding a...

The generator will be designed to capitalize on the energy potential available both in the winds above the ocean, and in the currents flowing beneath the waves. The device will use an omnidirectional wind turbine sitting 47 meters above the sea on one end of a vertical shaft, with a different type of omnidirectional turbine design, a 15 meter diameter, spinning at the other end under the surface. The floating unit is supposed to be stable and self-righting, thanks to a...

Portable air quality sensors could help people suffering from chronic conditions like asthma and COPD breathe a bit easier by allowing them to check the air condition in their immediate with their smartphones. The system will consist of small air quality sensors that could be carried by the individual or deployed around a particular area. The sensors will be able to measure local concentrations of pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and ozone, and transmit the data wirelessly to...

A new touchscreen able to identify users by their fingerprints could bring a new level of security to computers used in public places. The screen will consist of a glass screen embedded with millions of optical fibers bundled together. The fibers will emit light rays from an image projector mounted below the glass while infrared light from an adjacent projector will bounce off the fingerprints to an infrared camera.

A new method of manufacturing a hybrid wing design could lead aircraft that use half the fuel a conventional airplane. While it has long been known that replacing the current tubular aircraft design with a "manta ray-type design" would significantly reduce fuel consumption, manufacturing the craft has been problematic because of difficulties in maintaining cabin pressure. It is easier to build a sturdy tube than the flatter shape required for the hybrid wing design. The idea...

The idea is to have a recycling bin that will separates materials based on sound. The bin will feature a swing top that will be able to pivot in two different directions, depending upon the sound an object makes when it hits the lid. Objects that make a 'ping' sound, such as cans and bottles, will drop into one side of the bin while plastics and cups that create a 'thud' sound will be dropped into the other side.
