A new method of stroke treatment is able to both restore circulation and remove clots with one insertion and has proven surprisingly effective. The device will be inserted into with a microcatheter. It will expand and trap the clot, and will be then retracted back to the catheter while the clot will be removed from the blood vessel by suction.

The idea is to create artificial red blood cells capable of transporting oxygen. The blood cells will be made using human stem cells. They will be natural and manufactured safely in large numbers. The artificial blood could eliminate the need to transport and store blood supplies, and could lower the chances of the transmission of blood borne diseases.

The idea is to develop a 'camera pill' which will deliver HD videos of the digestive tract in real time. The endoscopic camera will include an HD video camera, light source, radio transmitter, battery, and microprocessor to record and transmit images of the patient's digestive tract. It will also transmit its location within the person's body through the same ultra-wideband waves it will use to transmit the image data.

The idea is to develop a method of spinning starch in fibers, which will lead to inexpensive paper products and biodegradable bandages. Starch is the cheapest and most abundant of the polymers, but becomes a thick paste when it contacts water. To counteract this effect, it is possible to add a solvent to the starch to enable it to be dissolved in a fluid without losing its molecular structure. An electrospinning device will overcome surface tension and allow the starch to be...

The idea is to use a male birth control method which will be both easily reversible and will last at least 10 years. The procedure will involve the injection of a non-toxic gel above the scrotum, which then will coat the sperms' passageway (the vas deferens) and incapacitate them as they swim through. Unlike a traditional vasectomy, the procedure will be simple and pain free, and will be reversible with another injection to flush out the gel.

The new DNA saliva collection device will reliably collect, transport, and store DNA samples for an extended period of time. The device will be painless and non-invasive, storing the sample in a standardized tube. The DNA samples will be stable enough for long term storage at room temperature. The device is supposed to help make DNA collecting DNA samples easier, particularly for the elderly, children, and people who are uncomfortable with needles.

A new nanocomposite material will be used to fill cavities as well as eliminate any bacteria remaining in the tooth. The material will be made up of silver nanoparticles and calcium phosphate nanoparticles. The silver will kill off any remaining bacteria while the calcium phosphate will help to rebuild the tooth's structure. The dangers of silver nanoparticles are still unknown, and integrating the silver in the material will help to reduce the possible risks of ingestion.

The idea is to create a smart bandage able to change color based on temperature, allowing the state of the wound to be easily monitored. The bandage will be made of a derivative of cholesterol that changes color as it heats up, moving from red through green to blue. Changes in wound temperature will indicate infection, inflammation, or a reduction in blood supply to the tissue as well as other potentially dangerous problems. Enabling both doctors and patients to more easily...

A new healing gel will help re-grow skin and blood vessels, which will prove especially useful for severely burned patients. The hydrogel will be made up of the sugar dextran dissolved in water, and polyethlyene glycol. The gel will differ from others on the market in that the structure of the hydrogel will require no additions of growth factors. The hydrogel will allow the body's natural inflammatory response to easily accumulate within the gel. It will even be possible that...

A new wristband will be able to diagnose and even predict potentially dangerous seizures. The wristbands will measure conductance, or how easily electrical current will pass through the skin. The skin conductance rises dramatically before and during a seizure, and the higher the conductance, the longer it takes for the brain to return to normal. The wristbands will be used to monitor people with seizure conditions, noting their intensity and possibly calling for help if the...
