A new polymer that kills bacteria and germs when exposed to sunlight could open the door to a wide range of self-cleaning furniture and gadgets. The titanium dioxide-doped polymer coating works through an electrochemical reaction. UV light from the sun causes the titanium dioxide to produce free radicals, which degrade cell walls and cell DNA, thus destroying bacteria and fungi. Smudges and fingerprints also disappear from the material after an hour of exposure to sunlight.

Why not develop a smartphone app which will work with metal detectors to help the hunt for unexploded land mines? The app will be able to detect and draw the outline of the buried land mine. The app will work with existing metal detectors, and provide a more exact visual of the shape and size of the mine. Why not create an electronic lamp which dynamically matches the color of whatever it stands on? It would be some kind of chameleon lamp :). The lamp would light the surface underneath it with two hidden white LEDs and then use an optical sensor to determine the correct color. It would match this color by adjusting the shade of numerous multi-color LEDs imbedded in its frame.

The shopping trolley handle will use LED's to let shoppers keep track of each item's food miles. The handle mounted device will be able to scan a product's barcode and determine its food miles, or how far it has traveled to reach the store. A series of LEDs will light up in relationship to how many food miles each item costs, with a larger number of lights indicating more miles. The handle can also be calibrated to measure factors such as fat, salt, and seasonality.

Each iPavement tile will be about 15 inches square, with an imbedded 5 GB microprocessor able to communicate with mobile devices through WiFi and Bluetooth. Along with providing internet access, the pavement will include a variety of cloud-based apps, such as reviews of local services, maps, or nearby hazards, which users can access while in the area.
