Injections of nanoparticles were proved to be effective while revealing blood clots location. The developed particles contain bismuth, which is actually a toxic heavy metal. The nanoparticles are rendered harmless by use of a compound that prevents the bismuth atoms from running loose in the body. Another molecule added to the nanoparticles' surface is attracted to fibrin, a particle found only in blood clots. The molecule draws the particles to the clots, where the bismuth shows...

My idea is to create a sleeping mask which not only blocks out the light but also wakes the wearer with a programmable sunrise. Sounds really cool :) An LED substrate sewn into the inside of the mask will make the magic happen. It will begin its glow about a half hour before the user chosen waking time.

My idea is to create an application for smartphones which will use phone's GPS and accelerometers to sense and pinpoint the location of potholes. The great challenge there will be how to teach the phone to tell the difference between a pothole and a speed bump or sewer grate.

My idea is to create a service which will provide elderly people with extra conveniences for living in their houses, i.e. suggest design changes to make their life easier. For example, kitchens could have contrasting worktops to improve visual orientation; mixer taps are recommended to have one handle; there could be extra handrails in a bathroom as well as a seat in a shower, etc. Highly skilled specialists will inspect the house and advice many design ideas for you to make your...

A new ultrasonic nozzle will use ultrasound technology to increase the cleaning efficiency of ordinary water while also reducing water use. The nozzle will differ from conventional ultrasound cleaning devices by the addition of bubbles, which will scrub the nooks and crannies of the material. The power will be set to low or high, and device will use one tenth the amount of water as a conventional pressure washer. It will also reduce the chances of contamination by putting less...

It is known that a basking shark feeds by swimming with its mouth open. The shape of the shark's body plays an important role in its efficiency as a feeder. A pressure differential is created as the shark swims, resulting in lower pressure along the shark's top and helping to draw water out of the shark's gills in a way that allows it to rely on the passive flow of water to feed. Why not design a turbine with the shark's design in mind? Water enters through the first turbine while...

The DNA of E.coli bacteria was found to be a great data storage. Data compressed into chunks can be placed in different cells and easily located later. This new method enables one gram of E. coli to store the same amount of data as 450 two-terabyte hard drives, and can even be used to store images, music, and videos.

Have you ever dreamed of a car that can be controlled by mind power? I guess it is possible to realize the idea using some kind of a brain-machine gaming interface. The 'driver' will be required to wear a neuroheadset with EEG sensors that will send bioelectric signals to the system. On the road, the system will link the patterns with commands such as steering and acceleration, which will be sent to the car's drive-by-wire system.

The idea is to create polymers that could be used to make paint that can heal its own scratches when exposed to UV light. The new polymers are to be using a method known as supramolecular assembly. Polymers made of small molecules will be formed into chains bound by metal ions. When these molecules are exposed to UV light, they will become temporarily unattached, forming a liquid that will fill in the scratches in under a minute. The molecules will reassemble and resolidify once...
