A tiny, microfluidic water sensor will not only be much more sensitive than current options, it will also be mass-produced for just five dollars each. The chip will be inserted into the soil or stem of a plant. It will contain a tiny cavity filled with water, and it will exchange that moisture with the moisture in its environment through a nanoporous membrane. As the moisture flows from one side to the other, the chip will measure any changes in pressure that will result from water...

Inspired by a hamster ball, the robot will propel itself along the ground without any limbs or wheels (or hamsters). A system of pendulums will swing in two different directions in order to shift the robot's center of mass. As a pendulum swings to the right or left, the robot will naturally move in the opposite direction as it will attempt to stabilize (the same thing happens when a hamster runs up one side of the hamster ball). The robot could be used as a low-cost system...

The idea is to develop a swarm of robotic bees that will help pollinate crops if required. The RoboBees will feature specially designed artificial muscles and miniature sensors that will to allow them to process cues from the environment in order to make decisions. They are intended to be used as a swarm, coordinating their actions without relying upon a single leader. Beyond their potential to augment the pollination of real bees, the RoboBees could be used for search and...

Weed killing will go high-tech and less toxic with smart lasers able to recognize, and destroy, unwanted weeds. The method will use cameras and a computer algorithm to distinguish the weeds from more desirable plants. Once the weeds are recognized the CO2 lasers will deliver a carefully measured beam directly to the weakest point of the weed. The energy levels of the beams will be exact, because a beam that is too weak will actually encourage the weed to grow.

A simulated sky scene ceiling, complete with passing clouds and varying luminescence could help to create a more comfortable office environment. The dynamic ceiling will consist of an array of tiles, each with 288 LEDs. The system of tiles will be covered with a diffuser which will blur the individual lights, and a combination of LEDs in blue, green and white will ensure the full light spectrum is produced. The virtual sky LEDs will be carefully configured to create a...

A new system that can recognize ripe strawberries in the field could the next step in replacing human farm workers with machines. The system will use four different parts of the magnetic spectrum, including microwaves and far-infrared light to peek beneath the surface of the strawberries and check for ripeness. The new technology could reduce waste by cutting down on the number of unripe strawberries that are picked and could improve efficiency. The similar technology could...

We've got smart phones, but what about smart credit cards that, like wallet-sized Lilliputians, tie you down when you're about to spend too much? If in your travels, you find yourself overspending on certain things - in my case, Starbucks iced coffee - this new money management tool could be useful. Through a service called inControl, you can tell your bank to decline your credit card at restaurants after, say, $300 in lunches in a month. Ron Lieber of the New York Times reports that...

My idea is to capture the wind a train generates as it speeds down the track, using that untapped force to create electricity. Several devices would be placed between the rails of either railway or subway lines. Each device would contain a turbine to gather the otherwise wasted wind energy and harnesses it to produce electricity. The cylindrical devices would be installed on the tracks below ground level on busy rail lines, where they should be able to gather enough wind to...

Why not use magma as a potential source of geothermal energy? It is actually able to power up to 30,000 homes. FYI, magma can produce dry steam at 750 degrees Fahrenheit, which can generate up to 25 megawatts of electricity. The usual geothermal well can produce 5 to 8 megawatts of electricity.
