An 'insomnia cap' is supposed to help insomniacs sleep by lowering the temperature of the brain. Increased metabolism in the frontal cortex of the brain is associated with insomnia; by cooling that area of the brain the metabolism is reduced. The idea is to create a special cap that will cool the cortex with tubes of circulating water. The insomniacs will not only fall asleep faster than the non-insomniac people, they also will stay asleep for 89 percent of the time.

The idea is to create a new device which will be small enough to be injected into the eye, where it will be maneuvered to deliver drugs more effectively. The device will be controlled electro-magnetically to the desired location of the eye, where it will then deliver a capsule of medication or remain in place for a long period of time, delivering prolonged treatment. It can then be removed from the eye with a magnetic needle. Such a delivery system could be particularly...

The idea is to create a glucose sensor for diabetes sufferers which will use tear fluid instead of blood. This may soon eliminate the need for finger pricks. The device will be able to take a sample of tear fluid by a painless dab at the corner of the eye. The device's sensor will measure the amount of glucose in the tear sample which is supposed to be very similar to the amount of glucose in blood. Why not take into account bone conduction phenomenon and create a telephone for hearing impaired people? The handset in such a case will have a pulsator which, when placed on specific areas of the head, will send vibrations directly to the speech center of the brain. The phone will also include a light to indicate an incoming call and different volume controls.

It will be great to have a device to help doctors identify suspicious moles that may require a biopsy. The device will scan for molecules with relative concentrations characteristic of melanoma. Shining a laser light on the molecular bonds will cause a shift in the reflected light, which will enable the doctors to identify the types and concentration of molecules, and whether or not a biopsy is necessary. With such a technology it will be possible to reduce the number of...

A new method of delivering eye medicine through contact lenses could ensure a more controlled and thorough dosing of medication. The contacts will come in two varieties- disposable daily wear and 30 day extended wear. The medication will be released slowly, controlled by drug memory in the lens structure. The lenses could make life more comfortable for patients who have to administer eye medications daily.

It was found that transplanting a mother's stem cells into her fetus could be a treatment for genetic blood diseases before birth. Stem cell transplants could prepare the fetus for a bone-marrow transplant from a tissue matched donor after birth. Standard bone-marrow transplants usually require the recipient to take immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of their life, but a dose of maternal tissue matched donor cells could prime the developing fetus's immature immune system for...
